what-is-a-medical-deputising-service

Access to a healthcare professional out of hours is not something many of us think about until we need it, which is where a medical deputising service steps in.

The Approved Medical Deputising Service (AMDS) Program offers non-vocationally recognised (non-VR) doctors the opportunity to gain general practice experience. Participants are granted access to Medicare benefits for providing deputising services to the community through an AMDS.

The program allows general practitioners, or GP’s, to deputise after hours care for their patients to alternative service providers. Approved participants are granted access to Medicare rebates for providing primary care to patients in their home, or in residential aged care facilities. This reduces the need for patients to attend an emergency department for after-hours care, and makes it easier than ever to access a medical professional if and when patients need one.

Out-of-hours primary medical care refers to medical care provided outside normal general practice surgery hours. The AMA has determined normal GP surgery hours to be 8:00am to 6:00pm on weekdays, excluding gazetted public holidays. Should you need to speak with a doctor outside of these hours, this is when the help of a medical deputising service can prove to be invaluable.
