Medicare Funded after-hours house calls under threat.

Queensland’s largest after-hours doctor home visiting service warns Queenslanders they are at risk of losing Medicare-funded home medical visits. The service is currently under review by the Government.

Proposed cuts to the service could cost the health system $724 Million and put added strain on emergency departments and ambulance services according to a recent Deloitte Access Economics report.

The Deloitte report shows home visits save taxpayers on average $240 when a patient is treated in their home as opposed to an emergency department when they have GP-type presentations.

Scrapping the Medicare rebate and making changes to the way in which services like these operate could see after-hours doctor house calls closed down in towns and regions across Queensland.

House Call Doctor Ambassador – TV legend – “Baby” John Burgess has today called on patients who use the house call service to stand up for the Medicare-funded service.

“They (the Government) said no changes, well, now they seem to have reversed that decision or thinking,” Mr Burgess said.

Mr Burgess is urging patients to tell their stories on how a house call doctor has helped them and their family to show why it is an essential Medicare service.

“Because you never know when you or a loved one will need a house call after hours.”
