Why work as a GP or doctor in Hervey Bay

As a doctor, the world is your oyster when it comes to the direction of your career. While Hervey Bay doctor jobs are on the rise, what can this city offer?

Regarded as a growing hotspot for both tourists and interstate migrants, the seaside town of Hervey Bay lies just under four hours north of Brisbane in Queensland. The town’s name is actually derived from the natural bay that separates the mainland, and the World Heritage Listed Fraser Island. The latter in particular is a major drawcard for the region, and attracts thousands of visitors to Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast every year.

Hervey Bay is considered to be the whale watching capital of Australia, with thousands of humpback whales migrating along the coastline between April and October every year. Researchers at The Oceania Project conducted a twenty five year study, which uncovered that the bay was an important social hub for humpback whales. Whale numbers have increased from approximately 2,000 in 1992, to a whopping 33,000 in 2018. Mature females visit Hervey Bay during August, in company with the cohort of immature males and females. During September and October, Hervey Bay transforms into an oceanic nursery, and is dominated by mature females with new calves. The new mums and babes are known to be very relaxed in the company of the whale watching vessel, which have also become a part of the landscape in the past few decades.

Data collected in 2016 showed that only 53, 000 full time residents call the Hervey Bay township home. If the big city lifestyle is your thing, then living in Hervey Bay is probably not for you. However, if the idea of sleepy, seaside towns that dot the Queensland coastline is more your thing, then Hervey Bay and its surrounding suburbs might just be your ticket to a sea change. There are larger areas a little more inland but overall the area is most known for their coastal towns like Scarness, Torquay, and Point Vernon. While they are not that large in size, they do each offer a little something for visitors or potential residents, with each featuring its own beaches and recreational areas.
