According to a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) more Australians are being hospitalised for fall related injuries.

From 1 July 1999 to 30 June 2013 the yearly number of fall related injuries increased from almost 327,000 to 442,000.

More than half the number of reported cases were for people over the age of 65 years with females more susceptible. Many falls are preventable and yet over 133 older Queenslanders each day require medical attention for fall related injuries.

With more than 60% of falls occurring in the bedroom House Call Doctor Chief Executive Officer Wayne Ormond says “It is important to remove potential hazards such as chords, clutter on the floor and ensure there is enough lighting, particularly at night”.

Falls can have a large impact on day to day life and the mobility of the elderly.
